A Bit About Us

The driver improvement class (also known as defensive driving course) offered is an 8-hour, National Safety Council course. The class is Virginia D.M.V. approved and conducted in a comfortable classroom setting at Central Virginia Community College’s Lynchburg and Bedford Campuses. These environments are much more conducive to learning than a rented motel or restaurant banquet room; characteristic of comparable classes currently being offered in the region. Emphasis will be placed on promoting and teaching driving skills that optimize driver/passenger safety.

THE COURSE

Our driver improvement class is available to:

  • Court Ordered Drivers
  • General Public
  • Government Officials
  • DMV Ordered Drivers
  • Business Members
  • Industry Workers
  • Insurance Compliance Participants
  • CDL Holders may voluntarily take the class for 5+ Safe Driving Points.
  • First time drivers with a learner’s permit may voluntarily take
    the class to start the their driving career with five plus driving points.

Our class schedule includes classroom participation in the discussion on various highway safety topics, videos and a final completion test. Successful completion of the course qualifies you for +5 safe driving points with Virginia D.M.V. and possible insurance rate reductions. (Check with your insurance company for specific rate reduction information).

The defensive driving course is held every second and third Saturdays of the month. For detailed schedule dates, click here. The fee for the class is $75. In the event of an emergency, and you are unable to attend the scheduled class, we will reschedule you for our next available class. Fees are non-refundable.

THE TRAINERS

The Driver Improvement Program of VA is the most experienced and recognized training program in Central Virginia. The program is owned and operated by Tony L. Mayhew of Bedford, VA.

After serving 31 years as a Virginia State Police Trooper, Tony decided to share his vast knowledge of highway safety with the community. Tony was recognized in 2012 by The National Safety Council for excellence in training. Tony brings his immense experience to the classroom to teach and educate driving safety.

Tony strives to deliver the most comprehensive training in the region, becoming National Safety Council certified yearly. In over 3500 evaluations, there has never been any negative feedback. This is a testament to their professionalism, knowledge and dedication to delivering the message of highway safety.  Students leave with a stronger sense of driver safety and truly enjoy the class. In fact, most students have been referred by graduates of previous classes.

Teaching alongside Tony is Instructor Lee Willis. Lee Willis is a Senior Special Agent with the Virginia State Police – VSP. He has been employed with the VSP since 1986 and has served has a Road Trooper, D.A. R. E. Instructor/Trainer, Criminal Interdiction Team, and currently serves our Commonweath in BCI – Violet Crime Investigation Unit. Lee has over 30 years of experience with the drivers and vehicles in Virginia and has served our residents throughout the state.

Lee enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.
